A patient transport apparatus comprises a support structure having a base 34, a frame 35, and a patient support surface 42 to support a patient. One or more handle assemblies 80 are coupled to the frame to maneuver the patient transport apparatus. The handle assemblies comprise one or more handles 82 to be manipulated by a user. The handles 82 are capable of being moved a stowed position (figure 3) and an extended position (figure 1). The handle assembly is articulated such that it can be moved from the extended position (shown in figure 3) to a higher relative position (shown in figure 2). The extendable and articulated handle assembly facilitates maneuvering of the patient transport apparatus, such as pushing/pulling the patient transport apparatus along a floor surface, lifting the patient transport apparatus over obstacles, loading the patient transport apparatus into an emergency vehicle.
