The present invention relates to a method and a device (1) for developing and/or inspecting latent fingerprints (2, 3) on a document, in particular a banknote (10) having a first surface (11) and a second surface (12). The device comprises a document carrier (20) comprising holding means (21) for holding the document, and is adapted to provide access to the first and/or second surface (11, 12) of the document, and a powder application system (30), comprising: a powder reservoir (31), adapted to contain a fingerprint development powder (32) having powder grains (33), a metering and agitation unit (35), a powder dispenser (36), wherein the powder application system is adapted to apply the fingerprint development powder (32) to the first and/or second surface (11,12) of the document, and to provide a predetermined impact velocity (vi) of the powder grains (33) in a moment of contact with the first and/or second surface (11, 12) of the document (10).
