The present specification shows that inhibition of bromodomain proteins in antigen presenting cells is more inflammatory, exhibits lower expression of the immunosuppressive molecule PDL1, and has the ability to restore the responsiveness of tolerant T cells. Accordingly, a method for promoting T cell activation during cancer immunotherapy in a subject is disclosed that involves administering a bromodomain inhibitor-containing composition to the subject undergoing cancer immunotherapy. Also disclosed is a method for treating cancer comprising co-administering a bromodomain inhibitor and an immunostimulatory agent to a subject.
