The ultrasonic system includes a set of CMUT transducer devices and a drive electronic device for operating the selected device of the set. Drive electronics are shared among all devices in the set. The selection is made using a series of switches, each switch between the DC bias output of the drive electronics and the associated input of each said device. This provides a simple way to provide selection between the drive electronics and the plurality of ultrasonic devices. In this way, the number of devices can be increased to cover a larger area, but the cost of the system cannot be increased to the same extent.
