In an ultrasound imaging system, a wireless radio (30) is included as part of a removable battery pack (14). A charge, signals used for locating a battery, and other information can be wirelessly communicated from the battery pack (14) even when not connected with an ultrasound transducer probe (12). Queries, configuration data, and other information can be communicated from an ultrasound system (32) or a locator device (36) to a battery of the probe (12) and a circuitry (20) thereof. The same radio (30) can be used by the ultrasound transducer probe (12) when connected.
