An orientation aid is displayed as a virtual model shape i.e. cone (1), at the instrument or in a particular positioning with respect to an axis (8) of the instrument. Specific geometric characteristics i.e. planes (13) of the femoral bone, are visually displayed as auxiliary representations, where the cone is aligned with respect to the auxiliary representations.
