According to the invention 17-alpha-estradiol and its derivatives can be used preferably as antidepressant drugs especially preferably as quick-acting antidepressant drugs. According to the invention 17-alpha-estradiol of formula (I) and its derivatives can also be used for the treatment and/or prevention of postpartum depression post-menopausal depression anxiety schizophrenia memory disturbance associated with depression or bipolar depression.
