602118 Disclosed is a beverage making system (1) and a method for forming a beverage. The beverage making system (1) comprises a precursor liquid supply (10)； a cartridge chamber (3)； a cartridge (4)； a carbon dioxide activating fluid supply (20) and a carbon dioxide gas supply (30). The beverage precursor liquid supply (10) provides a precursor liquid (2). The cartridge chamber (3) is arranged to hold a cartridge (4). The cartridge (4) comprises an internal space which contains a carbon dioxide source (41) being is solid form having adsorbed carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide source (41) emits carbon dioxide gas which carbonates the precursor liquid (2). The carbon dioxide activating fluid supply (20) provides fluids to the cartridge chamber (3) for contact with the carbon dioxide source (41) causing the source (41) to emit carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide activating fluid supply (20) also controls an amount of fluid provided to the cartridge chamber (3) in order to control an amount of carbon dioxide gas emitted by the carbon dioxide source (41). The carbon dioxide gas supply (30) conducts carbon dioxide gas emitted by the carbon dioxide source (41) to the precursor liquid (2) via the beverage precursor liquid supply (10) to carbonate the precursor liquid (2) under a pressure greater than ambient pressure.
