The scanner derives scan data from a patient identifier and individual blood units and provides the scan data to the processor. The processor evaluates the scan data to ensure that the blood units match the patient identifier. If the blood units do not match, a blood infusion protocol is aborted. If the blood units match the patient identifier, then the blood infusion protocol is allowed to proceed. The blood infusion protocol requires at least two verification scans for any individual blood unit to achieve a transfusing status, and an additional scan of the patient identifier may be used to place the used blood units in a complete status.
