A medical system 10 and method 100 for automatically imaging a vessel wall. A patient scout scan to locate the patient's target vessel is automatically performed using magnetic resonance MR (102). Scout scans are 3D, 3D and isotropic. The MR data set for the scout scan is automatically reconstructed (104) into foot-to-head FH projection, left-to-right LR projection, and back-to-front PA projection.
