An apparatus is provided for growing crops in a substrate medium wherein the substrate medium is supported by a carrier 1 which is slidably mounted to at least one upstanding support member 2 and the height of the substrate medium above the ground may be adjusted. The carriers are supported on the support member by a support bracket 11 in the form of a sleeve. A plurality of ropes or cables 3 are fixed to one end of the brackets passing over guide wheels 9 at the top of the support member. Also disclosed is a method of growing crops in a substrate medium using an apparatus according to the invention wherein the height of the substrate medium above the ground is varied in response to the climate.
