PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bed occupancy state detection method capable of determining that a subject is present on a get-on/get-off area at the peripheral edge part of a bed part and has placed feet on a bed installation surface.SOLUTION: The detection method includes: a load detection step S1 of detecting loads respectively applied to four end corner parts of the bed part 21 by four load detection means 2 a bed occupancy load storage step S10 of storing the total output of all the load detection means as bed occupancy loads when the centroid position of a subject H is within a bed occupancy area 23 at the center part of the bed part 21 a first determination step S30 of determining whether or not the centroid position is within the bed occupancy area 23 and a third determination step S36 of determining whether or not the present total output of all the load detection means is equal to or lower than a prescribed ratio to the bed occupancy loads when it is determined that the centroid position is not within the bed occupancy area 23.
