Various embodiments of an apparatus, system and method for identifying the position of a dose-enabling device within the body''s gastrointestinal tract are provided herein. In some embodiments, the dosable device includes an axial optical sensing sub-unit positioned proximate at least one end of the device and a sensing unit having a radial optical sensing sub-unit positioned proximate the radial wall of the device And can autonomously identify the location in the gastrointestinal tract. In some embodiments, the dosable device includes an optical illumination source and a detector operating at a plurality of different wavelengths, and can determine the region of the gastrointestinal tract by using the trait characteristics of organ tissue and occasional microparticles.
