The present disclosure provides compositions and methods for treating pulmonary hypertension. The compositions and methods are based on administering a NO-releasing compound, such as nitrite, to a subject in need thereof in an amount sufficient to increase the level of circulating nitric oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator, thereby reducing the subjects blood pressure and increasing blood flow.
