A device for use in a process that involves accessing an epidural space includes: an elongated member having a distal end and a proximal end an ultrasound component located at the distal end of the elongated member a rigid tubular member having a tapered distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen extending between the distal end and the proximal end wherein the ultrasound component is configured to emit ultrasound in a distal direction, and to receive reflected ultrasound and wherein the elongated member is slidably disposed in the lumen of the tubular member.
