The invention relates to N-hydroxysulfonamide derivatives of the followingformulas:(see formula I) (see formula II)that donate nitroxyl (HNO) under physiological conditions and are useful intreating and/orpreventing the onset and/or development of diseases or conditions that areresponsive to nitroxyltherapy, including heart failure and ischemia/reperfusion injury. Novel N-hydroxysulfonamidederivatives release HNO at a controlled rate under physiological conditions,and the rate of HNOrelease is modulated by varying the nature and location of functional groupson theN-hydroxysulfonamide derivatives.
