A patient is positioned in a supine position on an upper surface of a platform, such as a surgical table. One or more arrays or navigational references can be mounted to the upper surface of the platform to define a reference plane. This reference plane can be used as a substitute or proxy for the anterior pelvic plane, which is associated with the patient's pelvic bone. Other arrays or navigational references can be mounted to the patient's pelvic bone to define a second reference plane. Using either or both reference planes, a surgeon using a computer-aided surgical procedure can align and mount an acteabular cup or component with respect to the patient's pelvic bone.
