The present invention is directed to an emulsion comprising an emulsifier, an isotonic agent and a docosahexaenoic acid triglyceride (DHA-TG) wherein the emulsion is substantially free of eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and is suitable for parenteral administration. The present invention is also directed to an emulsion comprising a docosahexaenoic free fatty acid (DHA- FFA) suitable for parenteral administration. The present invention is also directed to a method of treating a subject suffering from spinal cord injury comprising administering to the subject an emulsion comprising an effective amount of a DHA-FFA to the subject in need thereof.
