The present invention relates to a surgical instrument system comprising a cable and a battery positioned on the cable. The system may additionally include a power adapter that may replace the battery and may provide power from an alternate power source. In other cases, the system may include a power adapter that is latchable with the battery to provide power from an alternate power source. The power adapter can be placed in series with the battery. alternatively, engaging the power adapter with the cable may electrically decouple the battery from the cable.
