A rectally insertable device for localized drug delivery to the anal sphincterofa subject and the use of the device is disclosed. The device comprises a shellsized forrectal insertion wherein an inner side of the shell contacts an activepharmaceuticalingredient contained within the shell and an outer side of said shell contactsbodyparts, said entire shell being impermeable to water and to said activepharmaceuticalingredient, with an aperture of a size which enables slow release of saidactivepharmaceutical ingredient from said shell through said aperture and whereinwhen thedevice is inserted into the rectum of the subject, the lower portion of theshell isproximal to the anal sphincter, such that the active pharmaceutical ingredientisreleased proximal to the anal sphincter.
