The present invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising a zinc 2+ salt and an α-polyglutamic acid carrier, and optionally an NF-kB inhibitor as a tumor-sensitizer, and methods of using such compositions to treat tumors in patients. The method comprises administering to a patient in need thereof a liquid or solid dosage form of a therapeutically effective amount of a Zn(II) salt and an α-polyglutamic acid carrier. Methods of treating a wide variety of human tumors, including those having a drug-resistant phenotype, using the disclosed compositions are provided.
