An inorganic silicate-substituted calcium phosphate hydroxy apatite, useful asa biomaterial, has a Ca/P molar ratioin the range 2.05 to 2.55 and a Ca/(P+Si) molar ratio less than 1.66. Thehydroxyapatite can be substantially free of carbonateions. The material has relatively high solubility and is able to releasesilicon into solution.
