A cough detection device comprises a microphone, a communications module and a processing unit configured to receive a signal from the microphone, determine whether it comprises a cough, and transmit, via the communications module, data associated with the signal. The device also comprises an adhesive member configured to enable the device to attach to a users body, for example on their neck, sternum, or back. The processing unit may implement software to determine the frequency or type of coughing, and the communications module may be configured to communicate cough detection data to a server. The server, in turn, may be operative to process and communicate the data to a third party, such as, for example, a physician. Systems may further be operative to provide a user interface (e.g., mobile or web applications) for interfacing with the platform. Also disclosed is a method of cough detection, comprising receiving a waveform, screening it to detect cough-like characteristics, analysing it to detect a cough and based on the analysis determine the cough type and issue an alert. The cough type may associate the detected cough with an individual.
