An irrigation system comprising: a plurality of interconnected spans, a plurality of tower structures upon which interconnected spans are supported, each of a plurality of tower structures comprising an adjustable drive for selectively driving a tower structure at a selected speed, a plurality of sensors, each of which is associated with a corresponding span from a plurality of interconnected spans and is configured to determine the alignment of the corresponding span from a plurality of interconnected spans, and a plurality of variable-speed drive control units, each of which communicates with a corresponding variable-speed drive and a corresponding sensor, and is configured to control a selected speed of the corresponding variable-speed drive in order to maintain a predominantly linear relative orientation of adjacent spans from a plurality of interconnected spans along a generally longitudinally oriented axis, while the selected speed of the corresponding control unit of the variable speed drive depends on 2.
