PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a possibility of reliable and easy-to-use spot check for monitoring respiration action of a patient.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to an optical sensor for a photoplethysmography measurement, comprising a light unit with a light emitter for emitting light into tissues of a patient and/or a light detector for detecting a part of the emitted light after interaction with the tissues, where the light unit is embedded in an elastic material. The present invention further relates to a device for contactless respiration monitoring of a patient, comprising: a distance sensor for consecutively detecting temporal distance variations relative to the patients chest and a calculating unit for determining the breathing activity based on the detected temporal distance variations.
