The brushhead attachment system includes a hub member (18) which is secured toa drive shaft of a personal care appliance (10) for oscillating action. Thehub member (18) includes a number of spaced locking elements (68) in the formof protrusions around the periphery thereof. An annular outer brushheadportion (22) with a first group of bristles (33) includes a plurality ofspaced grooves (35) in the outer surface (39) thereof which mate withextending pins (36) in the body of the appliance for insertion and removal ofthe outer brushhead portion (22). An inner brushhead portion (24) isconfigured to fit within the annular opening (28) of the outer brushheadportion (22) and includes a plurality of depending legs (56) which mate withthe protrusions (68) on the drive member for resulting oscillating action ofthe inner brushhead portion (24) when the drive member oscillates, at leastsome of the legs (56) having latch elements (50)which fit onto an interior lipof the outer brushhead portion (22) in such a manner that the inner and outerbrushhead portions maybe installed and removed as a unit, while permitting theinner brushhead portion (24) to be freely rotatable relative to the outerbrushhead portion (22).
