Disclosed is a surgical instrument that includes a first jaw, a second jaw, and a firing member. The firing member comprises one or more cams configured to position the first jaw with respect to the second jaw. In various examples, one of the cams is oriented at an angle non-parallel to another cam to reduce strain in the cam. In a particular example, at least one of the cams comprises a leading protrusion and a rear protrusion positioned behind the tip protrusion that is configured to engage the same jaw. The ends of the front and rear protrusions are not attached to each other and are movable with respect to each other.
