A ventilator with a safe standby mode is provided. Thesafe standby mode allows a user to disconnect a patient from the ventilator,without the ventilator generating alarms and while maintainingpreviously entered ventilation parameters. In addition, while in the safestandby mode, a patient connection status is monitored, and a ventilationmode is entered automatically if the ventilator determines that a patientis connected to the ventilator while the ventilator is in the safestandby mode.
