The invention provides a method for the non-oxidative (direct) coloration of hair, the method comprising the step of topically applying a direct dye to the hair in the presence of dihydroxyacetone the direct dye having a azo chromophore and at least one primary amine (-NH2) group.The presence of dihydroxyacetone increases the direct dye substantivity and resistance to wash off.
