A sample collection and delivery device for collecting clinical samples and delivering the samples to, for example, microfluidic test devices for diagnostic analysis is disclosed. The sample collection and delivery device includes a closed housing for coupling with the sample tube at one end, an open luer for engagement with a complementary luer on the microfluidic device at the other end, and a filter matrix disposed therein. The filter matrix is air permeable and liquid impermeable at atmospheric pressure to prevent the sample from flowing through the open luer end when coupled to the sample tube housing the sample.
