Some embodiments of the invention provide a system for measuring at least two hemoglobin species in a blood sample of a patient by a spectroscope, and for at least measuring the pH of a blood sample by the biosensor. The system includes a disposable cartridge adapted for insertion into the slot of the analyzer and the result is used to monitor the acid-base condition of the patient.
