A puncture needle comprises a spiral-shaped groove (3) in a needle tube (1). Wall faces (3a, 3b) of the spiral-shaped groove (3) are ultrasound reflecting faces. When forming the spiral-shaped groove (3), the needle tube (1) is moved along the axis thereof while being rotated and a grinding stone (2) is brought into contact with the outer circumference face of the needle tube, with the spiral-shaped groove formed in the outer circumference of the needle tube with the grinding stone. The wall faces of the spiral-shaped groove which is formed in the needle tube are reflecting faces, and the facing of the reflecting faces with respect to the axis of the needle tube changes with the change of the location of the spiral thereupon. Thus, even if the direction of the projection of ultrasound on the puncture needle is constant, one site of the reflecting faces whereupon the facing changes will be a reflecting face which is desirable with respect to the ultrasound, making it possible to obtain a desirable ultrasound echo.
