The method to synthesize sialic acid comprises providing a plant comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding N-acetyl neuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) synthase or Neu5Ac lyase, and growing the plant and expressing the nucleotide sequence thereby synthesizing the sialic acid.
