Provided is a system for delivering a vaso-occlusive device for release within the vasculature of a patient wherein the vaso-occlusive device (10) comprises an outer helically wound primary coil (14) having a proximal end (16) and a distal end (17), defining a lumen (15) between said proximal end and distal end. The proximal end of the vaso-occlusive device is detachably mounted to the distal end (33) of an elongated delivery means (30). Further, the system also comprises an attachment element (19), in particular a first attachment element, at the distal end of the vaso-occlusive device and a stretch resisting member (20) having at least two proximal ends and at least one distal end and extending at least partially through said lumen and passing through said attachment element wherein said distal end of stretch resisting member is releasably attached to said distal attachment element. Thus, the present invention has the advantage that the vaso-occlusive device is not damaged during manipulation by a physician and thus ensures that the risk of injury to a subject is reduced during a medical procedure. The present invention also provides a method for producing a system for delivering a vaso-occlusive device within the vasculature of a patient.
