Disclosed is a safety lancet assembly configured to pierce a patients skin. The safety lancet comprises a housing and a lancet disposed with the housing. The lancet includes both a block and a piercing tip attached to the block. The lancet is disposed within the housing such that the lancet may move from a retracted position to the piercing position. Additionally, the safety lancet includes a use indicator to alert a user or patient if the lancet is currently in the retracted position or if the lancet has been previously released to the piercing position.
