Provided are piperidine derivative compounds of the general formula (I), wherein the variables are as defined in the specification. Examples of the compounds include (2S,4S)-4-benzyloxy-1-(2,2-diphenylacetyl)piperidine-2-carboxylic acid, (S)-5-benzyl-2-(2,2-diphenylacetyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[3,4-b]lindole-3-carboxylic acid and (2&rsquoS,3S,4&rsquoS)-1&rsquo-(2,2-diphenylacetyl)-3-phenyl-[1,4&rsquo-bipiperidine]-2&rsquo-carboxylic acid. The compounds are antagonists of the angiotensin II type 2 (AT2) receptor. The compounds may be useful in the treatment of pain, cancer and osteoporosis.
