Disclosed is a system which is configured to manipulate energy transferred by members defining a knee joint. The members collectively define a path of motion and have a knee cartilage having an energy absorption component configured therebetween. The system includes a first attachment structure configured to be permanently attached to a first member of the joint and a second attachment structure configured to be permanently attached to a second member of the joint. An implantable energy absorbing member is attached to the first and second attachment structures. The energy absorbing member is configured to absorb a portion of the load on the knee cartilage during only a portion of the gait cycle.
