An apparatus for processing at least one plant stalk having a fibrous outer part (skin) and an inner section (hurd) comprises a toothed roller 10 and a bending element, where the toothed roller 10 comprises teeth 13 projecting from the surface of the roller 10. Each tooth comprises a leading portion 22 and a trailing portion 23 where the leading portion 22 extends a shorter radial distance from the roller 10 compared to the trailing portion 23. The plane XX of the teeth 13 when horizontally aligned defines a scissor plane XX and the bending element is positioned below the scissor plane XX, such that on contact of the stalks with the bending element and the teeth 13, the stalks are caused to bend, the fibrous outer part is caused to split and the inner hurd is substantially separated from the fibrous outer part.
