An electronic fishing appliance 100 comprising: a port for releasably connecting to an ancillary fishing accessory 400 that includes a light source； and a controller to control the state of light emitted from the fishing accessory’s light source. The port may physically couple accessory 400 and appliance 100. Appliance 100 may be a bite detector 110. Accessory 400 may be a swinger or hanger. Appliance 100 may adjust the state of the light source light from a first to a second state in response to a stimulus, where the stimulus may be: fishing line motion； a change in status of the accessory 400； a signal from another appliance 100； or an alarm signal, possibly indicating a security breach has occurred. The light source may comprise a multi colour light emitting diode. The state of the light from the light source may comprise the: colour, intensity, flashing frequency, duty cycle, modulation of the light. The state of the light may be automatically adjusted according to the local environment or current time. Electronic fishing appliance 100 may communicate wirelessly with a remote control 201 to change one or more operational parameters according to one or more signals from the remote control 201.
