The surgical access device comprises a seal assembly (51) having a plurality of partially circular seal members (55) each attached to a common ring (53) retained within the device about its longitudinal axis. In use, the sealing members are disposed radially inward of the ring to be stacked. When not in the device, the sealing member is movable from a radially outer position of the ring to a position radially inward of the ring. The seal core includes a seal assembly and a protective member that is disposed proximally of the seal assembly during use.
