The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising echinochrome as an active ingredient for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases and, more specifically, to echinochrom which is an antioxidant quinoid pigment extracted from sea urchin, which does not represent toxicity to a cell, capable of increasing usability inside a body by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity in an irreversible and competitive manner and inhibiting excessive degradation of acetylcholine. In addition, the echinochrom additionally having capacity for removing NO can inhibit or reduce an inflammatory reaction related to excessive NO generation. Accordingly, the pharmaceutical composition comprising echinochrome as the active ingredient of the present invention can be used as a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating neurodegerative diseases caused by acetylcholine deficiency.본 발명은 에키노크롬을 유효성분으로 함유하는 퇴행성 신경계 질환 예방 또는 치료용 약학조성물에 관한 것으로, 보다 상세하게는 성게로부터 추출되는 항산화 퀴노이드 색소인 에키노크롬은 세포에 독성을 나타내지 않으며, 아세틸콜린에스테레제의 활성을 비가역적 및 경쟁적 방식으로 저해함으로써 아세틸콜린의 과도한 분해를 억제할 수 있어 생체 내 활용성을 높일 수 있다. 또한 에키노크롬은 부가적으로 NO 소거능을 가지고 있어 과도한 NO 생성과 관련된 염증 반응을 저해 또는 감소시킬 수 있다. 따라서 본 발명의 에키노크롬을 유효성분으로 함유하는 약학조성물은 아세틸콜린 결핍에 의한 퇴행성 신경계 질환 예방 또는 치료용 약학조성물로 사용될 수 있다.
