A hand-held surgical instrument comprises an orientation determining unit for determining the orientation of the instrument, and an indicator arranged in use to provide an indication of the orientation to a user. The orientation determining unit is preferably arranged to determine the orientation of the instrument with respect to at least one, preferably two and more preferably three axes. As an example, a drill (18) has a handle (18a) and a drill motor portion (18b), on which is mounted an orientation determining unit (20).
