PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress degradation of a sulfonated pyrene compound under irradiation environment of sunlight in the case that service water is treated by adding a water treatment agent containing a water soluble polymer having carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid salt as a monomer unit, and a sulfonated pyrene compound as a trace material to the service water.SOLUTION: A water treatment agent added to service water contains: a water soluble polymer such as polymaleic acid, having at least one monomer unit selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid and carboxylic acid salt and a sulfonated pyrene based compound such as tetra sodium 1,3,6,8-pyrene tetra sulfonate.
