The present invention provides humanized antibodies that immunospecificallyrecognize human .alpha.9 integrin. Someof these antibodies inhibit the biological functions of the .alpha.9 integrin,thereby exhibiting therapeutic effects on various disorders ordiseases that are associated with a9 integrin, including cancer, e.g., thegrowth and metastasis of a cancer cell, and inflammatorydiseases, e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, hepatitis, bronchialasthma, fibrosis, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, multiple sclerosis,granuloma, an inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn'sdisease), an autoimmune disease, and so forth.
