Methods for treating hair or preventing damage to hair during relaxation are disclosed herein. In the relaxing process with the hydroxide containing relaxing agent, the damaged hair can be treated with a formulation containing one or more active agents. The active agent formulation may be applied concurrently with the hair relaxing formulation or may be applied immediately after application of the relaxant formulation to reduce damage and breakage.
