A protective material comprises a substrate 1 and a receptor binding molecule 2 (e.g. Carrageenan or Galactose oxidase) capable of binding to a filo virus GP glycoprotein (GP) envelope. The substrate may comprise woven or non-woven natural or man made fibres. The material can be made into protective clothing (for example gloves, overalls, goggles, shoes, shoe covers, body suits or masks) for use by people who may come into contact with filo viruses or are infected with filo viruses (e.g. Ebola). The receptor binding molecule may be provided as a solid, gel or foam coating on the substrate.
