This invention relates to biodegradable superabsorbent polymer hydrogels for use in agriculture and methods to produce the same. The hydrogel material holds water and water-soluble plant nutrient, and dispenses its aqueous contents into soil or other growing media in a sustained manner. This application allows for a significant reduction in the frequency and volume of water needed for irrigation. Furthermore, the swelling capacity of the hydrogel is designed to be pH-dependent and ideal for dispensing urea. In basic environments where ammonia volatilization is the dominant pathway for nitrogen loss, the swelling capacity of the hydrogel is high and impedes the release of urea into the growing media. The hydrogel is a network of graft polymers. A water-soluble carbohydrate component principally provides biodegrdaability. Synthetic hydrophilic polymers are grafted onto the carbohydrate backbone. Within these synthetic hydrophilic polymers are acrylic acid units that provide pH-responsive swelling behaviors. Crosslinkers network the individual graft copolymers.
