A pressure support system (30) and method of treating disordered breathingthat optimizes the pressure delivered to the patient to treat the disorderedbreathing while minimizing the delivered pressure for patient comfort. Thecontroller (50) in the pressure ,support system operates as a set ofprioritized control layers, wherein each control layer competes for control ofthe pressure generating system (32) to implement a unique pressure controlprocess. The pressure support system also controls the pressure provided tothe patient based on the variability of the monitored data and a trendanalysis of this data, including an indication the skewness of the patientsinspiratory waveform.
