A method of designing an orthopaedic hip joint implant, the method comprising: conducting a kinematic analysis of a population eligible for hip replacement surgery, establishing contact points between a native femur and a native acetabulum for each person in the population using the kinematic analysis, creating an imaginary sphere that correlates with the contact points for each person in the population, determining a dimension of the imaginary sphere for each person in the population including at least one of radius, diameter and circumference, and designing at least one of a femoral component and an acetabular component using the dimension of the imaginary sphere for each person in the population.
