The device (100) has a measurement support (110) carrying ultrasound signal emitter-receiver members (120) for emitting/receiving an ultrasound signal. An electronic processor unit is adapted, based on a function of the ultrasound signal received by the receiver, to deliver a signal that is representative of distance between the support and an eyeglass frame worn by an individual's head, and to deduce a characteristic reading distance. A visual detection unit (160) verifies that the frame is situated in a part in a measurement cone of one of the members.
